Student Success Through High School and Community College Partnerships 12-8-2022

  • This professional development session conducted for Kappa Delta Pi (Honor society for educators), looks through the lens of Kannapolis City Schools (KCS) and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) in North Carolina, with attendees learning how to build successful partnerships between local education agencies and community college partners.
  • This successful partnership has culminated in KCS being recognized for the NC Works Award of Distinction as an Outstanding Innovative Partnership, CTE Regional Director of the Year, and Game Changer Award recipient. Building on lessons learned through the KCS-RCCC partnership, we will share how each educational entity has worked to ensure that the dynamics of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion are a priority in the partnership.
  • We offer an interactive activity focused on diversity, equity, access, and inclusion to identify the core values and beliefs of the participants and their respective educational agencies.
  • Additionally, we will share how we choose dual enrollment career and technical education pathways that are taught on the high school campus, and how we are continuing to expand our equity and access focus through locally articulated credit.

A Journey of Identity: A Recipe Worth Sharing in Food.

A Journey of Identity: A Recipe Worth Sharing in Food.

  • Diversity Equity and Inclusion Conference Presentation 11-18-2022 Rowan-Cabarrus Community College G.U.I.D.E. Conference Growth, Understanding, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (G.U.I.D.E.)   A Journey of Identity: A Recipe Worth Sharing-Found in Food
  • This presentation was an open dialog relative to food, aligning in detail why food has been a chosen as a topic of interest. Food has been chosen as a topic through personal experiences due to the presenter’s cultural-familial upbringing.
  • Food as love and why:     The parents of the presenter grew up with very little food.  One parent was raised in the mountains of Greece during the German-Turkish alliance when Germany invaded Greece in the 1940’s.  One chicken egg was used to feed seven siblings.  The other parent grew up in a Catholic Charities group home with minimum food choices, and offerings.  This led to an idea of safety and security in having an abundance of food in the pantry as a comfort to the presenter’s family home and upbringing.    Family gatherings with a wide variety of foods were common. Weight, health, and social settings were all impacted due to these ideas within the presenter’s childhood. This background information on the presenter builds the foundation of conversation on how food will be discussed.
  • The goal of the presentation was to provide a lens into demonstrating the significance of food on students, faculty, and staff from a cultural, academic and lifestyle implications perspective. An awareness of food from a dining, and social standpoint is portrayed for educational leaders toward creating a holistic environment with physical emotional health & wealth at the forefront.
  • The feedback provided from many, highlighted feelings of reflection on their own cultures and how they see food.
